A doctor and two paramedical staff were arrested by the police on Saturday on charges of negligence while aborting a pregnant woman in a private nursing home in the city on Friday. Sub divisional police officer, Jammu east, Rafiq Manhas, said Stuti Sharma, a resident of Nowshera, and who was in the eight month of her pregnancy, had gone to JK Medicity at Channi Himmat for routine checkup on Friday.

During her visit to the hospital, a few other female patients had come for termination of pregnancy, Manhas informed. The paramedics and the doctors had asked Sharma's husband Rakesh Kumar to buy medicines from a nearby shop. Upon seeing the long list of medicines, Rakesh inquired about them. He was told that the medicines were for termination of pregnancy.

When he realised that the doctors had prescribed the wrong medicines for his spouse, he rushed back to the nursing home, Manhas said. However, the doctors had already given her the medicines for aborting the child. "After consuming those medicines, the child died in the womb", Manhas informed.

He said, "It was a case of negligence. We have registered a case under sections 304-A and 313 of the Ranbir Penal Code." He stated that the doctor Amarjeet Singh and the paramedic Roma Devi were arrested on charges of negligence, adding that others found guilty during investigations would be arrested.
