Two Assam policemen injured in grenade blast

Two Assam police constables were injured in a grenade explosion suspected to be triggered by a Ulfa cadre at Kenduguri in Jorhat town of upper Assam on Tuesday wee hours.

Jorhat police said that the incident occurred at around 4.45 am when policemen on patrolling asked a cycle borne youth to sop his movement but the youth defying order of the policemen on duty and move forward. He carried a large size bag on the cycle carrier.

"Our men on duty followed the youth and caught him. A scuffle occurred between two of our men and the youth. The youth then exploded a grenade in which our two men were injured", said Jorhat SP Sanjukta Parasar.

The youth managed to escape. A magazine of AK 47 rifle and a Chinese hand grenade was recovered from the spot. Police suspected that the youth might be an Ulfa cadre and he was on outfit's job to shift arms and ammunition from old hideout to safer zone as security forces have intensified operation against Ulfa in Jorhat district.

The injured police constables were admitted at Jorhat Medical College hospital. They were identified as Bolin Sonowal and Kesab Gogoi.

Bomb Diffused
Guwahati: A powerful country-made bomb was recovered from a bag near the main gate of the Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) oil refinery on Tuesday.

The bomb was kept in a bag in front of the gate of the refinery in Noonmati area of the city, police said. Bomb disposal squad safely defused it, they said. Amonium nitrate and cycle bombs were found inside the bag that could have caused largescale destruction, they said.
