Two brothers were beheaded at a tea estate near Jorhat in upper Assam on Wednesday and the killers surrendered with the severed heads, police said.

"Seven persons surrendered to police at the Chinnamora police station with two severed heads. We have started investigation into the incident," said Sanjukta Parashar, SP of Jorhat district.

Parashar said that two more persons involved in the incident were later arrested.

Those beheaded were brothers and were killed by a group of nine at the Rajabari Tocklai tea estate.

The victims were identified as Bolo Tanti and Ruhi Tanti who worked at the tea garden. The killers were also workers in the same tea garden.

Police said that Bolo Tanti was attacked first while he was on his way to the garden and was beheaded with sharp weapons. Later, in similar manner, the group also killed Bolo Tanti's elder brother, Ruhi Tanti.

Though the reason for the gruesome murder was yet to be known, garden workers alleged that the victims were involved in land brokering.
