Two charged with Batalia's murder appear in court

india Updated: Dec 04, 2012 21:42 IST

The two suspects charged with the murder of a Simon Fraser University (SFU) student, Maple Batalia, appeared before the court on Monday.

Gurjinder Dhaliwal, aka Gary (20), and Gursimar Bedi (22) were arrested on Friday in connection with the 2011 murder of Maple Batalia.

Dhaliwal, Batalia's ex-boyfriend, is charged with first-degree murder, while Bedi is charged with manslaughter using a firearm.

Gary sat in the prisoner's box, separated by a thick glass from Maple Batalia's parents a few metres away. He was asked no questions. He quickly left the court after the hearing, which lasted less than two minutes. Bedi appeared at the same time.

Both were ordered to appear before the court on December 17 by video.

The Crown also asked the court to order the two men not to communicate with the dead woman's family or with each other.

Batalia was gunned down in the SFU campus parking lot on September 28, 2011. Dhaliwal was arrested for allegedly assaulting Batalia.

Batalia's parents were upset after the hearing and left, surrounded by supporters, after a brief meeting with the Crown. They didn't speak to mediapersons.

Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said they were tired, having learned on Saturday the two men had been charged.

Pound confirmed Dhaliwal was Maple's ex-boyfriend.

Batalia's sister Roseleen Batalia said: "This isn't an easy day for us. We are just hoping that Maple will finally be at peace."

The family has raised $50,000 for the Maple Batalia Memorial Fund for health science students at SFU.
