Two engineers and a student were among four persons who met watery grave in separate incidents across the state on Tuesday, turning the festive season sombre on the eve of Christmas.
Three of the incidents took place during picnic revelry, police said.
In the first incident, one Shashi Kumar Mehta of Hazaribagh died at the Dasam Falls, around 40 km from the state capital.
According to police 20 students of a private coaching centre of Hazaribagh were picknicking at Dasam Falls when the incident took place. The victim was a student of St Stephen’s School, Hazaribagh.
“The student drowned while bathing in danger zone of the fall,” said Raj Deo Singh, officer-in-charge of Bundu police station.
Till the report was filed divers were engaged by the local police to search for the victim’s body.
In the second incident, an aspiring engineer Sudhakar Prasad drowned at the Tenughat dam in Bokaro district while he was taking bath with one of his friends. According to the local police, around 12 youths aging between 16 and 18 were picnicking near the dam when two went inside to bathe.
A local youth, who had jumped into the dam after the two friends called for help, managed to save one. Divers fished out the victim’s body after two hours of search.
In the third incident, two engineers of Damodar Valley Corporation drowned while bathing in the Tilaiya Dam in Koderma district. The deceased engineers have been identified as Om Prakash Gupta and Prem Saurav. One of the victim’s lost his life while trying to save his colleague.
Hari Lal Yadav, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) headquarters, Koderma told HT that three engineers were bathing at the dam. “Gupta went deep into the waters while bathing. Saurav jumped into the water after Gupta called for help.”
