Two persons are feared killed and three others were injured in a powerful bomb blast which partially blew the house of slain BJP legislator Krishnanad Rai in Ghazipur township on Tuesday morning.
The blast was aimed at wife of the slain legislator's wife Alka Rai and nephew Manoj Rai, the key witness in the assassination of Krishnanand Rai.
Senior police and civil officers including Director General of Police Vikram Singh, IGP Varanasi Range Kashmir Singh rushed to the spot.
DGP flew from Lucknow and visited the blast site. Fire brigades and heavy force was deployed in the area soon after the blast as a precautionary measure.
Sources confirmed death of a security jawan whose body was being retrieved from the debris. He was identified as Nand Kishore Thakur.
Sources said on the basis of the statement of one of the injured under treatment in the district hospital, another person was also trapped in the debris. There is no official confirmation of the second death.
Reports said the blast occured at 9.45 am on Tuesday when five persons were inside the house including Manoj Rai.
Manoj Rai, it may be recalled is the key witness in the assassination of Krishnanand Rai on November 29, 2005. Mau legislator and mafia Mukhtar Ansari and his MP brother Afzal Ansari are the accused in Rai's murder who are lodged in Ghazipur jail.
As one fourth of the house used specially by Alka Rai, wife of Krishnanand Rai was completely reduced into rubble due to impact of the blast, it is believed that the blast was aimed at her, who fortunately was away at her another house in Varanasi.
After hearing news about the blast, Alka Rai also rushed to Ghazipur and also visited the injured. The security jawan who was trapped under the debris was found dead under the the debris.
Bomb disposal squad was also rushed to Ghazipur from Varanasi to examine nature of the blast.
The injured have been identified as Chotu, domestic servant, Manoj Rai, nephew of slain Krishnanand Rai, Dharminder Yadav and Babu Dhan.
"We are in the process of recovering body of a security jawan from under the debris", Tarun Gaba, Superintendent of Police, Ghazipur told HT confirming one death.
He however did not confirm another death. Sources said when the debri will be cleared, the exact number of deaths would be known only.
MM Baig, Additional SP Ghazipur who first reached the blast site told Hindustan Times, `the injured were shifted to a local hospital'.
Talking to reporters at the blast site, DGP Vikram Singh said this blast case will be soon solved and the cuprits brought to justice.
