To commit suicide, four girls started together from school on Saturday and two of them ended their life by jumping into a well.

The minors, one in Class 11 and the other in Class 12, killed themselves at Badhra village, 42 kilometres from Bhiwani. The other two dropped the idea out of fear. The four students had left their government school around noon and, instead of going home, walked to the well. As two of them jumped into it, the others, one in Class 7 and one in Class 9, heard their shrieks and backed out.

The survivors' alarm got the farmers working nearby to run in for rescue but it was too late. The victims' families cremated them in a discreet manner and declined to share any details of the incident with the police. "They even refused to hand over the bodies for autopsy," said Vijinder Singh, deputy superintendent of police at Dadri. "One of the funerals was at Badhra and the other at a village in Mahindergarh district."

"The girls had an altercation with someone during a farewell party at the school, and bitter over that, they committed suicide," said a source in their village. The entire village was tightlipped about the incident.

"Everything was all right and today was their farewell at the school, where they met teachers and friends in a cordial manner before they left to commit suicide," said Vijender Singh, sarpanch of Badhra. Later, he requested the media not to publish the news. Asked the reason, he said: "It will bring bad name to the village and the victims' families."

Asked about the police case, the sarpanch said none had been registered. The villagers of Badhra also requested DSP Vijinder Singh and Bhiwani's superintendent of police to not register any case, and even the bereaved parents were not keen. SP Simardeep Singh, however, denied any knowledge of the incident.
