Two held for attacking Dalits at Pabnawa

india Updated: May 16, 2013 21:23 IST

The district police have arrested two youths for assaulting two Dalits at Pabnawa village, about 25 km from here, late on Tuesday night.

Kuldeep Singh, superintendent of police (SP), told Hindustan Times on Thursday that the accused were identified as Rinku and Bhura Ram of Pabnawa and were charged with attempt to murder.

The accused had allegedly attacked Ram Mehar and Sunil at the village, escalating caste tension at the village.

It was alleged that the accused from the dominating Ror community had targeted Dalits. However, the SP said that the police were interrogating the accused to ascertain the cause of the attack.

“The two accused were named after we recorded the statement of Sunil, who is undergoing treatment at the local civil hospital. He had named only these two youths but we are investigating if more persons were involved in the crime,” he said.

The SP said according to the medical update from the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Research and Education (PGIMER), Chandigarh, Ram Mehar, who had sustained head injuries, was now stable.

He said though the situation at Pabnawa was under control, ample force had been stationed to avoid any conflict.

On April 13, a violent mob of Rors had attacked a Dalit basti and ransacked several houses and shops owned by Dalits.
