Two Youth Congress activists were arrested for showing black flag to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee as he arrived in Midnapore to review drought situation in West Midnapore district on Monday.

West Midnapore is among 11 drought-hit districts in West Bengal.

Atin Gainti and Dipu Biswas were arrested when they waved black flag to the chief minister alleging "all-round failure" of the Left Front government, police said.

Later, reviewing the drought situation at a high-level meeting at the circuit house, Bhattacharjee said only 41.7 per cent kharif crop were cultivated in West Midnapore district and the rest destroyed due to deficient rainfall.

The chief minister instructed the district magistrate, NS Nigam, to ensure that irrigation water was made available to farmers and that power supply maintained round-the-clock.

The meeting was attended, among others, by district officials, agriculture secretary, divisional commissioner and secretary to the small irrigation department.

Later, he held a meeting with top police officials and called for better coordination between the administration and the police force to combat the Maoists.

The chief minister had last visited the district in November, 2009.
