Two held in Australian tourist rape case

Two youths were arrested on Monday in connection with a complaint by an Australian woman tourist that she was raped by one of them, police said.

The victim, Mercy Luz (23), staying here on a six-month tourist visa, had been befriended by a Vishwas, a Bachelor of Business Management drop-out,police said.

The girl, whose father is employed in the Australian Embassy in Australia, had rented out a room in Lakhmiuram
area and was staying there.

On June 24, Luz told Vishwas that she wanted to travel to Bangalore by bus to call on a friend but the youth offered to take her in his car, which she refused.

However, Vishwas trailed her and persuaded her to alight from the bus between Chennapatna and Ramanagar and took her to a hotel where he allegedly raped her, police said.

Vishwas's cousin S Gowda, who promised Luz that he would rescue her and ensure her safe return, also allegedly tried to sexually assault her.

The girl managed to escape and filed a complaint with the police yesterday. Both the arrested are in police custody, sources said.
