Two young Kashmiri entrepreneurs have been selected for a global summit of entrepreneurs, 'Power of Youth - India Summit-2013', which is being held in New Delhi this week.
Humeera Qayoom and Aarif Shafi Khanyari - who were supported and mentored by international development agency, Mercy Corps, under its Startup Kashmir Youth Entrepreneurship (SKYE) Development project - are part of the 15 delegates from India who will be participating in the fourth edition of global summit of Power of Youth (POY) in New Delhi.
Based in Scotland, United Kingdom, POY is bringing around 30 of the world's most prominent young entrepreneurs (under 35) together in the summit.
The two Kashmiri entrepreneurs were recently invited to New Delhi by the Scottish government where they met the external affairs minister of Scotland and shared their entrepreneurial journey with him. The Scottish government, under its South Asia Development programme, had funded the Mercy Corps' SKYE Project, which worked to foster an ecosystem conducive for youth entrepreneurship in Kashmir Valley. More than 170 Kashmiri youth entrepreneurs started their businesses under SKYE project.
"It is because of Mercy Corps' training and support that I am a part of this international summit where top global entrepreneurs are participating," said Aarif Shafi, who started his jewellery manufacturing business, D' Ali's Jewels.
"Unemployment in a major problem in Kashmir and there is a huge need and scope for work like Mercy Corps is doing on entrepreneurship development in Kashmir," he added.
"It is so exciting for me to be among of the top youth entrepreneurs of world. It's a great opportunity for sharing and learning," said Humeera Qayoom, who has established Huma Carpets. "I would like to thank Mercy Corps for supporting me and all other young entrepreneurs of Kashmir," she said.
