Two killed, 45 injured in Kashmir blast

A grenade blast left two persons dead and 45 others — four of them soldiers - injured at Shopian in southern Pulwama district on Saturday. The condition of 10 injured persons was stated to be critical. They have been rushed to Srinagar for treatment.

SSP Pulwama Nitish Kumar said unidentified terrorists hurled a grenade in the main market at Gol Chakri in Shopian. The grenade exploded injuring many people including some security personnel. Two civilians also died in the incident, he said.

The slain persons have been identified as Mohammed Yousuf Lone of Rai Kapran and Mohammed Akram Shah of Damhal Hanjipora. Lone was a village level worker (VLW) in the state revenue department. He died on spot. Shah, who had received critical injuries died on way to hospital. Hospital sources in Shopian said that 32 injured persons were brought to the hospital, who were discharged after initial treatment. Seven critically injured persons have been brought to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital.

Official sources said that four soldiers and two policemen were also injured in the blast. They said that the condition of three of them was critical and were rushed to Srinagar. A Victor Force spokesperson however confirmed the injuries to two soldiers.

Police foiled another attempt by terrorists to throw a grenade at Pulwama by apprehending the grenade thrower. SSP Pulwama Nitish Kumar identified the grenade thrower as Reyaz Ahmed Baht of Pohoo village.
