Two men were killed in a gun battle with security personnel in Ranchi early Tuesday, police said. "The two people, who were riding a (motor) bike, fired at the police when they were asked to stop. In a counter attack, both of them were killed," Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar Singh told reporters.

"Both were shooters of the Rajesh Khatri gang. Khatri is currently in jail. We had got information about their movement and stepped up our vigil and they were traced," he alleged.

The incident occurred in Sudhdeonagar area of Ranchi around 3 am on Tuesday. The police claimed to have recovered two pistols and live cartridges from the two men.

Ranchi has witnessed an upsurge in crime in the last few months. Three days ago, a forest ranger, Anil Kumar Singh, was shot dead while he was returning from his office.
