The explosion occured just as the Myladuthurai-Tirunellvelli passenger train was entering the station at about 6 pm, the Madurai police said.

The blast was so severe that the roof of the platform was also damaged as passengers ran for cover.

Police officials said it was not clear if the explosion was that of a country-made bomb or a consignment of fire-crackers. No group has claimed responsibility.

A medical team was rushed to the railway station.

The injured have been rushed to the Government Hospital in Madurai, about 450 km from Chennai.
