Two persons were killed and a Government Railway Police constable was seriously injured when an assailant allegedly opened fire at Jogbani railway station in Araria district on Wednesday.

Mukesh Kumar, a money exchanger, was shot dead by Basant Chaudhary, who allegedly had criminal antecedents, after the former resisted attempts to loot his cash box, superintendent of railway police (SRP), Katihar, VK Chaudhary told PTI.

A man who tried to overpower the assailant was also shot dead by the accused, the official said, adding the victim could not be immediately identified.

On hearing the gun shots, a GRP constable Rameshwar Yadav rushed to the spot unarmed and grappled with Basant, who then shot him in the chest.

The constable has been rushed to a hospital at Biratnagar in neighbouring Nepal in critical condition, the SRP said, adding the accused was arrested.
