Two persons were killed and seven critically injured when police opened fire at Maholi police station in Sant Kabir Nagar district on Friday.
The villagers were agitating over the non-availability of fire tenders to control fire, which had engulfed their fields on Thursday.
According to the sources, villagers had assembled today at the Maholi police station to demand the officers to provide them fire tenders. However, cops and the villagers got into some heated arguments.
Later, the villagers pelted stones that resulted into the police firing. Two people died on the spot and seven, critically injured, were rushed to the Santkabir Nagar district hospital.
Additional Director General Police (law and order) Brij Lal said that senior police officers from Basti divisional headquarters had been sent to Sant Kabir Nagar, nearly 200 km north of Lucknow, to control the situation. Additional forces have also been sent from Khalilalbad district headquarters to the village.
The SP Sugri Giri told Hindustan Times that there were only two fire tenders in the district spread over in an area of 1646 sq km to meet the requirement during summer fire in field destroying standing crop. He said the both tenders had been sent to Bakhira police station to control field fire.
