Two militants, including a top commander of the Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT), were killed in separate encounters with the security forces on Monday, just after the Kupwara encounter last week.
LeT commander Abdul Rehman alias "Rehman Bhai" was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in southern Pulwama, 35 km from Srinagar.
Rehman was divisional commander of the LeT for south Kashmir, and after the killing of Abdullah Unni in an encounter last month, he was made chief operational commander for the valley.
"In the morning at around 10.15am, acting on specific information, a joint operation was launched by the army and the police. During the operation one LeT member was killed," said Srinagar-based defence spokesman Lt Col JS Brar.
"In another gunfight in Kupwara district, one (militant) was killed," Brar added.
In the Kupwara encounter last wee, five militants and were four members of the security forces died.
