Two militants shot dead in Manipur

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter which occured when security personnel asked occupants of a car to stop for checking.

Two unidentified militants were shot dead in an encounter with combined forces of police commandos and Assam Rifles in Manipur's Imphal West district, official sources said on Monday.

The encounter occured when security personnel frisking Hiyangthang area under Wangoi police station asked occupants of a car to stop for checking at around 9 pm on Saturday night.

At this the two militants who were seated in the car opened fire at the security personnel who returned it.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, the two militants were gunned down and their car, one AK 56 rifle and 18 live rounds were recovered from the spot.

Over 200 persons including civilians were so far killed in militancy-related crimes this year in Manipur, the sources said.
