In a rare instance, the army has arrested two militants who had sneaked into Kashmir from across the Line of Control.

Defence spokesman Naresh Vig told HT that the army had cordoned off an area in the Tangdhar sector, Kupwara, in northern Valley on Saturday evening after receiving intelligence inputs.

He added that soldiers challenged and overpowered two militants, who have been identified as Tanveer Ahmad (24) and Akhter Ali (32).

Vig said one pistol, two magazines, ammunition besides an identity card issued by the authorities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were among various items recovered from them.

"The militants were handed over to the local police," the spokesman said.

This is for the first time this year that the army has managed to capture infiltrators alive. "Something like this never happens. It's very rare that infiltrators get apprehended while trying to cross over. When the militants crossed over they didn't realise they were trapped and surrounded. So when they were challenged, they surrendered," said an official, who did not want to be named.

The arrests are being considered 'a success' after last month's standoff between the army and militants on the LoC.

A group of militants and the army was engaged in a gunfight in north Kashmir's Keran sector since September 23. Militants had attempted many infiltration bids in the adjoining areas, which were foiled by the army.

The initial bid was by 30 to 40 militants at multiple points. The attempt was foiled.
