Police arrested two teachers from Tulsi Ram Maheshwari (TRM) Senior Secondary school at Modinagar on Sunday afternoon in connection with the death of a class XII student inside the school-premises.

The student — Pavnish Panwar (17) — allegedly died due to overexretion during a physical-education examination on Saturday morning, police said.

After Panwar’s death, his family had staged protests and demanded arrest of school officials alleging that the 17-year-old was made to run extra-rounds during a 100 meters sprint session and that the school officials showed negligence in providing quick medical facilities which led to his death.

Police on Saturday lodged an FIR under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Sunday arrested two physical education teachers — Narendra Kumar (38) and Omkar Singh Rathi (50).

Panwar’s post-mortem reports received late Saturday night remained inconclusive and could not ascertain the exact reason of his sudden death, police officials said.

The doctors preserved his viscera for further chemical-analysis, police added.

“On the basis of investigations we found that the physical education teachers pressurised the child to run extra-rounds during the sprint-session even though he had complained of deteriorating health. Further the matter was taken lightly and there was a delay in provision of medial treatment,” said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Capt. M.M. Baig.

The school management expressed shock and said police made the arrests under pressure. “The teachers were not arrested on Saturday although called for questioning. They acted under pressure. We will now approach the court to remove the stringent IPC sections,” said Ankur Maheshwari from school’s management committee.
