At least 37 Vietnamese fishermen died when Typhoon Chanchu sank 17 boats in the South China Sea last week, state radio said on Sunday, as rescuers kept searching for about 300 missing sailors.

Chinese rescue vessels and Vietnamese ships continued the search on the foggy seas for survivors of the storm that hit in the middle of last week as it swept from the Philippines toward China, said officials.

Chanchu, which means 'pearl' in Cantonese, has now claimed more than 100 lives across Asia.
