Kolkata football team George Telegraph's Ugandan player Alex Katete died after a heart attack in Silchar on Tuesday morning.

Team manager Anjan Dutta told IANS the 24 year old from Kampala had a heart attack hours after his first match in India Monday evening. George Telegraph lost 2-1 to Lajong Sports Club in the ongoing second division I-League.

"He was depressed because it was his first match in India. We had a team meeting in the night after the match. Then everyone retired to their rooms. Then at around 2 am his room mate Francis (a Nigerian) informed us that he was suffering from chest pain. We did everything possible to help him recover but he was pronounced dead at hospital," said Dutta.

Dutta added that Katete had been registered as a player after a thorough medical check-up.

The player's body will now be flown to Kolkata and the club is trying to contact his family in Kampala.
