Gujarat Assembly

The Gujarat assembly witnessed chaos on Tuesday over the drinking water crisis in Saurashtra and north Gujarat. The entire opposition was suspended for a day after it created a ruckus, demanding a debate on the issue.

Leader of the opposition Shankersinh Vaghela raised the matter during the Question Hour.

"No village or town in Saurashtra, Kutch and north Gujarat gets water even once a week. The government has failed to provide drinking water in thousands of villages, notwithstanding the chief minister's tall claims," Vaghela said. "Since the session began, we have sent 17 requests to the office of the Speaker, seeking discussion. But the government has steadfastly refused."

Reminding the government of CM Narendra Modi's promise that all water bodies of Saurashtra would be filled with Narmada water by December, Vaghela said, "Where is that water now?"

The opposition has launched a high voltage agitation in Saurashtra on the water issue.

"This is just beginning of summer and already, water has become costlier than liquor in the state," said Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhvadia in Rajkot.
