UK scribe’s rapist gets life

A fast track court in Udaipur sentenced the owner of a guesthouse to life imprisonment on Wednesday for raping a UK journalist on December 23 last year.

Justice Brijesh Kumar Jain also imposed a cash penalty of Rs 25,000 on Parbat Singh as well as a fine of Rs 10,000 for house trespass under Section 450 of the Indian Penal Code.

The 32-year-old journalist had arrived in Udaipur on December 19 last year and stayed at the Pardesi Guesthouse.

She had filed a report at the Ambamata police station on January 9.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Udaipur, Sudhir Joshi who handled the investigation told Hindustan Times that the court had concluded hearing last week.

“A medical examination had proved that sexual intercourse had taken place. She had informed her friends about the incident and police reordered their statements prior to putting up the challan in the court on January 12, 2008,” said Joshi.

In her statement to the police, Martin had said that she was terrified after the incident and got admitted to a local hospital. She alleged that Parbat Singh had forcibly entered the room in the night on the pretext of giving her a blanket and raped her.
