Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was behind the kidnapping of Food Corporation of India (FCI) executive director Phulchand Ram from Guwahati two days ago.

"It is most likely the ULFA is involved in the kidnapping. We have some information available with us now although we cannot divulge any details for security reasons," the chief minister told journalists.

The FCI official was abducted from near his official residence in Guwahati late on Tuesday.

An unidentified caller telephoned the New Delhi residence of Ram and said he was in their custody. "Security forces and various other agencies are working hard to rescue the official," he said.

Ram was in charge of FCI operations in the northeast, Bihar and Jharkhand.
