An ULFA militant was killed and another critically injured in an encounter with security forces at Merapani along the Assam-Nagaland border on Sunday.
Official sources said in Dibrugarh that troops of 11 Guard regiment and CRPF personnel launched a joint operation in Biakhowa chowk at Merapani in Assam's Golaghat district following a tip off that a group of ULFA militants had taken shelter in the area.
The security forces cordoned off the area and was in the process of evacuating the villagers when the militants hurled grenades and fired at random at the security forces in a bid to escape.
The troops retaliated and during the subsequent two-hour long gun-battle the militants managed to sneak out of the cordon and kept lobbing grenades.
The security forces kept on firing during the chase with one militant getting killed and another critically injured. The others managed to escape.
A 9 mm pistol with several rounds of ammunition and documents, including training schedule of ULFA camps, were recovered from the slain militant.
