Ulhasnagar tense after clashes

The police have arrested two people for allegedly inciting violence and filed a complaint against 200 others for protests following the incident where two persons tried to set fire to the Shahid Baba Deepsingh Ji Gurudwara on Tuesday.

The police have arrested two people for allegedly inciting violence and filed a complaint against 200 others for protests following the incident where two persons tried to set fire to the Shahid Baba Deepsingh Ji Gurudwara on Tuesday.

Harinder Singh Matharu, president of Gurunanak School, Kalyan and the Sikh community leader, said on February 26 night around 3 am two people entered the gurudwara and threw burning clothes where the Gurugranth Sahib was kept. He said two karsewaks, Murarisingh Khalsa, 35, and Satpalsingh Goud, 46, who were sleeping outside the gurudwara saw two people running away but could not catch them.

After the news spread people from the community from all over Thane district started pouring into Ulhasnagar and staged an impromptu protest. For the last 15 years, there has been an ongoing dispute Gurudwara committees over land.

DCP Dr Shivajirao Rathod said the police have arrested one Suresh Singh and are looking for his brother Rakesh for inciting violence. Rathod said investigations into the case continue.
