Paving the way for another big-ticket fight in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Bharti on Friday said she would respect the party's decision if it fielded her against Congress president Sonia Gandhi at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, according to PTI.
Amid talks that the saffron brigade was likely to pick her to fight from the traditional stronghold of the Congress party, Bharti, however, added she did not want to leave Jhansi in Madhya Pradesh, the seat already allotted to her by the BJP.
"I have told Rajnathji (BJP president Rajnath Singh) I can't leave Jhansi. It is up to them to decide on Rae Bareli. Will accept whatever they decide," an NDTV tweet quoted Bharti as saying.
The BJP will shortly announce its candidates for Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's seat, Amethi, and Rae Bareli, according to another PTI tweet.
There is a big talk that the BJP might field TV actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani from Amethi, which also has Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP's) Kumar Vishwas in the fray. If the BJP fields Bharti from Rae Bareli, she could follow in the footsteps of the party's prime minister nominee, Narendra Modi, by fighting from two seats.
Earlier in the day, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, "We will put formidable candidates in Amethi and Rae Bareli."
On Wednesday, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who is close to the saffron party, had urged the BJP to field Bharti from Rae Bareli.
If the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister fights against Sonia Gandhi, UP would see two mega battles this elections.
AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal has already announced his decision to take on Modi from Varanasi.
