BHOPAL (SOUTH) MLA and State BJP spokesman Umashankar Gupta slapped a Public Works Department (PWD) sub-divisional officer at his residence on Wednesday.
SDO Ramesh Chandra Chaturvedi posted at the New Bhopal Division lodged a complaint with the T T Nagar police station accusing Gupta of slapping him.
Confirming the complaint, police said investigation was under way and an FIR would be filed based on probe. Gupta had allegedly misbehaved with a police officer during Uma Bharti’s chief ministership.
PWD employees in the division staged a demonstration, demanding action against Gupta. The Diploma Engineers Association and Public Works Department State Officers Associationwarned of a statewide strike if no action was taken against the BJP MLA.
Chaturvedi alleged that Gupta summoned him to his residence about 9 am. During a scussion on some issue, Gupta lost his temper and slapped him, the SDO said.
Gupta has denied assault on the PWD official. He said he had summoned the official in connection with some work in a ward of his constituency.
Congress demands FIR
THE CONGRESS today condemned former minister and local BJP MLA Umashankar Gupta for allegedly manhandling and slapping a PWD engineer at his residence.
State Congress spokesperson Manak Agrawal said power drunk State BJP leaders seem to have given up legal and moral propriety and Gupta’s conduct was only an example in this regard.
He said manhandling and slapping a Government official constituted a cognizable offence but surprisingly T T Nagar police preferred not to register an FIR regarding the incident when the engineer concerned, R C Chaturvedi, went there to lodge a complaint against Gupta.
He demanded that FIR be registered against Gupta immediately and criminal proceedings initiated against him.
