Finally, there’s good news at hand! Through some quirk of inflation and recession, you can now afford to party on New Year’s Eve — in style. In an effort to get people out of their houses and on the dance floors, bars, pubs and clubs across the city are slashing their cover charges heavily, some even by 50 per cent.
Last year the cover charge at The Mediterranean restaurant at Sevilla, The Claridges, was Rs 11,950. This year they’ve slashed it down to Rs 8000. Tabula Rasa, to start with, has done away with the VIP section that had cover-charges of Rs 15,000 per couple last year. The venue has also slashed their rates by 30 percent as compared to 2007.
Saurabh Khanijo, owner of Kylin at Vasant Vihar, said, “The spirit this time is not high. There is a lot of competition as well, with many pubs and bars opening all around.” Cover charges for Ivy at New Friends Colony have been reduced from 9,000 per couple last year to 7,000 per couple whereas the rates of Kylin have been reduced from 6,000 last year to 5,000 a couple. Minimal decoration has compensated for the slashed prices. “We had a grand Moulin Rouge setup at Ivy last year, this time we are cutting costs on decorations and themes while the food and drinks remain the same.” said Khanijo.
Hotel Crowne Plaza has also slashed its cover charges by 50 per cent and will have low-key celebrations this year. Sanjay Mehta from Bristol Hotel in Gurgaon, said, “The market sentiments are really negative. Restaurants and hotels are doing everything possible to attract customers.”
