One prisoner was killed, while another one managed to escape after a bomb exploded insider the Munger court premises in Patna on Monday. The prisoners – all hardened criminals - were being taken back to jail after production in the court in connection with a murder case.
The bomb exploded as the prisoners were boarding the van to return to the jail. There was confusion for some time, but the police acted quickly to prevent escape of prisoners. In the firing, prisoner Deni was killed on the spot, while another one Amit Madnal was caught by the police.
Two more persons, suspected to be with the prisoners, were also arrested. The third prisoner, Rupesh Yadav, however, managed to escape. A constable was also injured in the incident, but he is said to be out of danger. Police have started search for Amit, who was a murder accused.
ADG (Headquarters) Neelmani said that all the three were hardened criminals. “Intensive search in on. Rupesh in a murder accused. Earlier also, he had managed to escape in a police encounter, while his accomplice was killed. We will find him soon,” he added.
Neelmani said that there was adequate security in the court. “Apart from the prisoner van, there was escort. The police responded quickly, due to which one person was killed, while another one was injured,” he said, adding the bomb was perhaps kept in a tiffin box and handed over to the prisoners along with food.
Neelmani, however, ruled out any naxal links with the incident. “All the three were criminals. There is no naxal involvement,” he added.
This is, however, not the first time such an incident has taken place. Earlier also, prisoners have been freed during their production in the court. A few months ago, an abortive bid was made in Danapur, when the prison van was attacked while it was on way to the court.
