Notorious underworld criminal Siraj Hasan, involved in several sensational crimes in the district, has been arrested and a country-made revolver and four cartridges recovered from him, a top police officer said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in Udupi, Praveen Madhukar Pawar, Superintendent of Police, said Hasan was arrested on Sunday, following a tip off, from a house at Santhekatte in Udupi, where he had been hiding with his wife for a fornight.
Pawar said the provisions of KCOCA (Karnataka Control of Organized Crime Act) would be invoked against the accused.
He said Hasan revealed during questioning that he had been working in Qatar for the past one year, with a fake passport obtained from Mumbai and had returned to India a fortnight ago
During this period, he developed close contacts with Madur Yusuf alias Isubu, who had masterminded attempts to murder several Hindu activists in Dakshina Kannada district and was wanted in more than six cases, he said.
The questioning also revealed Hasan’s contacts with several underworld and fundamentalists groups active in the two districts, he said.
Hasan also said that he had targeted several VIPs in Udupi district, Pawar said.
Police are probing his involvement in Hawala racket, which is reportedly helping fundamentalist activities in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
He also had other cases against him like attempt to murder, possession of illegal firearms registered against him in Shirva, Surathkal and Udupi police stations in the district he added.
Hasan has been remanded to police custody till July 23, he said.
