India’s ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni could turn down the Jharkhand government’s offer to become the state brand ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan apparently because he is unhappy over how such public campaigns are handled, according to one of his family members and a close friend.
Dhoni, who is already leading the state’s forest and environment, pulse polio and literacy campaigns, is said to be upset at their “lackadaisical and sluggish” handling, the relative told HT after a discussion about the issue with Dhoni.
The skipper is also likely to refuse an offer to promote tourism in Jharkhand.
Amrendra Pratap Singh, principal secretary of the state drinking water and sanitation department, confirmed that a senior official from the department had contacted Dhoni for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan last month, but they wereyet to receive any response from him.
According to the family member, the state government has roped in Dhoni for several government campaigns, but despite his involvement such campaigns barely received a positive response. Following the government’s “poor initiative”, Dhoni has decided not to support any further government campaigns.
However, according to a family friend of Dhoni, there is more to it. “Dhoni is disappointment over non-allotment of a land for his cricket academy in Ranchi as (earlier) proposed by the state government,” he said.
He added that the project is yet make any progress despite the approval of former deputy chief minister-cum-Jharkhand sports minister Sudesh Mahto.
Dhoni, who is taking a break from cricket and spending time with his family in the state capital, has refused to comment on the issue.
