Praising the Goa government for implementing a uniform civil code, BJP president Rajnath Singh on Saturday said all states should follow its example in the interest of national integrity.
Briefing reporters in Panaji, Singh urged all political parties to come together and plan a strategy for implementing a uniform civil code across the country.
"Goa is the singular example of secular India where the uniform civil code has been implemented," he said. "If it could happen in a multi-racial and multi-religious society like Goa, why can't it happen in the rest of the country?"
Quoting a Supreme Court ruling, he said the apex court had twice expressed grave concern on the issue.
Singh expressed hope that the president would take the initiative by taking everyone into confidence to launch a common code throughout the country. "If this is done, it will be in tune with the constitutional provisions."
