The Raipur district court on Tuesday granted bail to Union Minister V Narayan Sami in a defamation suit filed by former state BJP leader Ajay Chandrakar.
Sami appeared before the court of Sharaddha Shukla, Judicial Magistrate First Class, where he was granted bail on furnishing a surety amount of Rs 5,000.
Chandrakar, former Chhattisgarh's panchayat and rural development minister, had filed the case against Sami seeking action against the minister who is also Congress general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Chhattisgarh.
Earlier, the Chhattisgarh High Court had dismissed the petition, by the union minister, requesting cancellation of defamation suit against him in Raipur court.
After the Raipur court's decision, Chandrakar told Hindustan Times that Sami had accused him on various occasions, during press conferences, of serious allegations of corruption amounting Rs 1,000 crore when he was state minister of Panchayat and Rural Development.
"Such unsubstantiated charges harmed my personal and professional reputation to a great deal, and I lost the November '08 assembly election from my Kurud constituency. My fight in the court was also aimed to deter such politicians as they speak and lead to character assassination merely on speculations", said Chandrakar, who lost to a Congress Party candidate in November '08 assembly election.
Sami had allegedly accused the BJP leader and his relatives of gross financial irregularities in National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme during his visits to Chhattisgarh before the November assembly polls in which the BJP retained power.
