Unused shell detonates, 1 killed

One farmer was killed and three injured seriously in a powerful explosion at Dariawala Billa village under Mehat Pur police station on Monday.

Explosion was caused by an unexploded army shell which was being used as a chisel.

The deceased has been identified as Avtar Singh (35), who died on the spot.

His brother Baljinder Singh, son Anmol Preet Singh (10) and a close relative Prabh Simran Singh a resident of Pammann village in Kapurthala district were seriously injured in this explosion, who were rushed to a Nakodar private clinic from where they were referred to a Jalandhar hospital.

Mehat Pur SHO Bimal Kant said that all four were trying to remove steering wheel of a tractor to change its bushes in their house.

The deceased used an army shell as a chisel to loosen the bolt of steering wheel. When he hit it with a hammer the shell exploded causing a big explosion killing the deceased on the spot. He said that it was so powerful that left arm of the deceased was cut off from the body.

SHO said that these shell are being used by the army for its training in Sodhi Pur Air force firing range in Ludhiana district. Empty cartridges are purchased by scrap dealers. He said the deceased had purchased it from a scrap dealer at Sidhwan Bet village to be used as a chisel. It was about 6 inch long with a one and half inch dia.

SHO said that a case under section 304-A, 337 and 338 of the IPC has been registered against scrap dealer Sonny son of Madan Lal of Sidhwan Bet.

The case has been registered on a complaint from Deep Singh the father of the deceased. He said in his complaint that his son had purchased spare parts material for use in tractor from Sonny scrap dealer. When he used it on Monday it exploded as it was an un exploded bomb of the army.

Jalandhar SSP (Rural) Ashish Chaudhary reached on the spot. A bomb disposal unit of army from jalandhar also reached on the spot. Unit in charge Major Sandeep Saini told media persons that prima facie it was a un exploded shell being used by the army.

He said that bomb disposal unit will search for small load shots in the house and adjoining areas. A police forensic team also reached on the spot.
