Two policemen on duty were shot dead in Firozabad on Sunday, raising fresh questions about the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and triggering a massive protest that injured many including a top cop.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Agra Range, Vijay Singh Meena, was injured on Monday, as protesters pelted stones at him on Agra Kanpur highway.
Meena was leading a police force trying to stop a rampaging mob. "A stone struck him, but it was minor injury. He is well," said Agra zone inspector general SK Gupta, adding the situation was brought under control by noon.
Up in arms against the killings of policemen Giriraj and Dinesh Pratap, people took to the streets earlier in the day and blocked the national highway connecting Agra. Many vehicles were damaged, disrupting traffic.
Giriraj and Pratap, posted at Ramgarh police station in Firozabad, were attacked by unidentified miscreants in the wee hours of Monday.
Giriraj died on the spot. Pratap was referred to a hospital in Agra where he died while undergoing treatment.
Ramgarh police station in-charge Ajay Yadav and sub-inspector Farooq were suspended for dereliction in duty, said inspector general of police SK Gupta.
The police said investigations were on.
Protesters, meanwhile, demanded that a case be registered against the Ramgarh SO and also called for the removal of additional superintendent of police Rakesh Pandey.
