UP gangster, wife shot at by unknown assailants

Ajay Singh, a close aide of arrested gangster Brijesh Singh, and his wife Meera were shot at by eight motor cycle-borne assailants - reportedly of a rival gang - at Taktakpur area when they were returning home in their SUV late on Saturday evening. Pawan Dixit reports.

About eight men on six motorcycles surrounded the vehicle- driven by Ajay Singh also known 'Khalyanak'- and opened fire at the couple around 8pm. Cops recovered 10 shells from the spot. The couple was rushed to Singh Medical Institute at Maldahiya and Ajay Singh's - who sustained four bullet injuries - condition is said to be critical.

Dr Ashok Singh, owner of Singh Medical Institute, said of the four bullets, two were still stuck. Ajay Singh's wife sustained two bullet injuries.

Meanwhile, the shootout created panic in the area. Hundereds of Ajay Singh's supporters were seen outside the hospital. A large contingent of police force has been deployed outside the hospital to prevent any untoward incident.
