The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday withdrew its order regarding closure of slaughter houses and meat shops across the state for nine days during Paryushan Parv observed by Jains.

“An order issued by the government earlier this year imposing a ban on slaughter of animals and sale of meat during Paryushan Parv is being withdrawn with immediate effect as the Supreme Court order on the basis of which the Government Order was issued was not found applicable for UP,” an official spokesman said here.

The state government on February 10 issued an order imposing a ban on slaughter of animals and sale of meat during Paryushan Parv of Jains.

The GO was issued by animal husbandry department on the basis of an order issued by the Apex Court on March 14 last year for Gujarat.

Last year, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation had passed a resolution imposing ban on slaughter of animals and sale of meat during nine days of Paryushan Parv.

However, the Gujarat High Court stayed the municipal corporation decision, which was further challenged in the Apex Court by Hinsa Virodhak Sangh, which vacated the stay.

Meanwhile, in UP a Jain delegation met the animal husbandry department with a copy of the Supreme Court directive on the basis of which an order was issued, official sources said.
