An interesting turn of events unfolded at the public meeting organised by the ruling Samajwadi Party at the Christian College ground in Mainpuri on Sunday. Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was towards the end of his 40-minute speech when he declined to lay the foundation stone for the Sainik School project and took the 20,000-strong crowd by surprise.
“I am not going to lay the foundation stone for any scheme till I am assured of the time taken for its completion,” stated Mulayam. His statement was apparently meant for the chief minister and his son Akhilesh Yadav, who had just ended his half-an-hour-long speech highlighting the development projects undertaken in Uttar Pradesh.
Taken by surprise, Akhilesh walked towards his father who was on the microphone. The SP chief repeated his question – “Hamein yeh batao ki school kitne samay main ban jayega?” (Tell me how long will it take for the completion of the school).
The CM assured to complete the construction of the school in one year from September 6. Not satisfied, Mulayam called the project in-charge, who assured to complete the construction within eight months.
This brought a smile on Mulayam’s face, but he awaited a nod from the CM. Akhilesh gave an assurance to his father and won a pat on his back. “I learnt this from Bansi Lal who used to lay foundation stones only after being assured about completion of project,” said Mulayam.
