The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested 1,361 people for trying to participate in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-sponsored Sankalp Diwas (pledge day) in Ayodhya.
The VHP had given a call to observe Sankalp Diwas on Friday at Ramsewakpuram in Ayodhya to take a resolve for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site.
However, the venue was shifted to Karsewakpuram after police sealed Ramsewakpuram.
Nearly 300 VHP members had gathered at Karsewakpuram under the leadership of Purshottam Narain Singh and took the pledge to launch an agitation for the construction of the temple. Police later intervened and arrested them.
A large number of people were also arrested from other parts of Ayodhya, said inspector general of police (law and order) RK Vishwakarma.
Yogi Aditya Nath, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gorakhpur, and some other senior leaders were among those arrested.
Shankaracharya Narendra Nand, who was going to Karsewakpuram from Hanuman Garhi along with supporters, was also arrested in the face of protests by devotees.
VHP leader Rajendra Singh Pankaj was arrested near Digambar Akhara with nearly 300 people.
Though the saffron outfit had called for observance of the pledge day across the state, the epicentre was Ayodhya.
Participants were to gather at Ayodhya, but many failed to reach due to tight security measures and sealing of entry points to Ayodhya.
However, the inspector general said those coming to Ayodhya to bathe in Saryu river on the occasion of Sharad Purnima were not stopped. Police had also made arrangements for their safe departure from the city, he added.
