UP polls to be held before May 15: CEC

Elections to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly would be held before the expiry of its term on May 15 next, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy said in Faizabad on Tuesday.
"Necessary preparations for the elections are in progress and the elections would be completed before the expiry of the term of the present Vidhan Sabha on May 15 next," he said.
He said that the authorities had been directed to complete the disposal of objections on the electoral rolls speedily before the final publication of the list on January three next.
The CEC directed the officials to review the objections thoroughly and physically verify them at booth level.
He also directed completion of the photo identity cards by January 15 and its distribution within a month's time.
Earlier, he held a meeting with senior officials of the division to review the preparations of the electoral rolls.
Gopalaswamy would be reviewing the progress in preparation of the rolls in the state capital and Kanpur on Wednesday.
