UP pull off thrilling one-run victory

UTTAR PRADESH pulled off a thrilling one-run victory over hosts Madhya Pradesh in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy under-19 cricket tournament played at the Usha Raje cricket grounds in Indore on Thursday.

UTTAR PRADESH pulled off a thrilling one-run victory over hosts Madhya Pradesh in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy under-19 cricket tournament played at the Usha Raje cricket grounds in Indore on Thursday.

Winning the toss, UP captain Gaurav Goyal opted to bat. Opener Gaurav lost his partner Chetan Singh for just 1 run when the score was 5. Subodh Shrivastava joined his captain but he could not last long.

Uttar Pradesh were in a spot of bother at 75 for three. When they reached 99, the team lost the captain. He scored 57 runs. Ankit Tiwari and Eklavya Dwivedi then came together and put on a 59-run partnership before Ankit was dismissed for 53. Eklavya was joined by Mohammed Khalid who scored a brisk 20. The team scored 201 for seven at the end of 50 overs.

For Madhya Pradesh, Paras Jain was the most successful bowler claiming 3/45. He was well supported by Rohan Shrivastava (2/31) and Mayank Rajput (2/20).

Chasing a modest target, Madhya Pradesh started off cautiously. Madhav Saxena and Himalay Sagar opened the innings. Himalay was the first to go when he had scored just 7 runs. Captain Zafar Ali joined Madhav and the pair scored 89 runs for the second wicket before Madhav was dismissed for 33 with the team score at 113/2.

Roham Shrivastava came and hit a couple of boundaries but MP soon lost Zafar Ali. He scored 61 runs. Rohan Shrivastava too followed his captain with his individual score at 33. The team score then read 182/4. At the same score, MP lost Varunesh Sharma for 28.

Rameez Khan was next to follow and MP were 199/6 needing three runs from two balls. However, they managed only one run and lost the match by just one run. For UP, Bhuvaneshwar Singh was the most successful bowler claiming 4/15 of 9 overs.
