UP's poor run continues, lose to Punjab

Hosts UP Wizards' poor show in the Hockey India League continued on Sunday, as they lost to Punjab Warriors 3-4 before a huge crowd of fans. In fact, it was a hattrick of losses for the Lucknow-based franchise, as on Saturday they had lost to Ranchi Rhinos 1-3. Sharad Deep reports.

SV Sunil scored a brace in the space of two minutes, while captain Jamie Dwyer and Christopher Ciriello scored one goal each. The Wizards' goals came through David Alegre, captain V Raghunath and Heroen Hertzberger. The win helped the Warriors jump to third spot with 20 points. It was a one-way traffic in the first quarter as the Warriors netted three goals, with Sunil striking back-to-back goals. After receiving an accurate push from just outside the penalty circle, Sunil beat three defenders and goalkeeper Marcel Balkestein to open the account in the second minute.
