Had it not been the continued support of her fellow residents, Rukmani Devi (name changed) of Bhim Nagar in Mall, 40 km from Lucknow, would have fallen prey to the shameless wantonness of sub-inspector Kamta Prasad Awasthi, who tried to molest her on Wednesday night on the Mall police station campus.
In fact, it was their backing that gave her the courage to take the cop head-on.
Kamta, who was posted at the Mall police station two months ago, didn't have a good image among the villagers.
People in the area were so fed up with his ways that they had decided to go after him.
As a result, when he called Rukmani to his residential quarter on the police station campus on late Wednesday night, the villagers stood outside to come to her rescue when need be.
"Strict action must be taken against Kamta Prasad so that no police official ever dares to make a similar attempt. Their job is to protect us and not behave in such a manner," said a resident Pyare Lal.
"No woman ever dares to go to a police station fearing the police officials' behavior. Rukmani was being harassed by the cop because she was helpless," said an angry Rakesh Kumar, another resident of the area.
Kamta had been calling Rukmani to the police station for the last 10 days regularly in connection with a petty case that was filed against her husband, a labourer, by their neighbour.
"He would call me after sunset and meet me in his residential quarter on the police station campus," said Rukmani.
"Initially, he would tell me that he was working on the files related to the case, but from Tuesday, he began misbehaving with me," said Rukmani.
She alleged that Prasad would ask indecent questions. When Rukmani tried to take someone along, Kamta would abuse and shoo the person away.
But on Wednesday, when Kamta called her at 9pm, Rukmani took some neighbours along with her. They quietly waited outside the police station in anticipation.
And when the sub inspector tried to molest her and she raised an alarm, they rushed to her rescue.
Rukmani had even recorded Kamta's conversation in a mobile phone on Tuesday night when the latter had called her at the police station. She alleged that he even asked for Rs. 10,000 from her to drop the case.
