Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Wednesday said the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre has failed on inflation and security front.

"Not only poor people but even the middle class are facing the brunt of high prices of food items," Advani told reporters after attending Garib Kalyan Mela in Dehgam town near here.

"The government has failed on removing poverty over the years. Moreover, it has totally failed on the front of inflation and security," he said.

Garib Kalyan Mela is a brainchild of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to extend direct benefit of schemes meant for the poor.

Modi said that the Centre did not seem serious in dealing with the issue of inflation and price rise.

Addressing a gathering at Garib Kalyan Mela, Modi said he has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh many times on the issue of inflation but the Centre it seems is not concerned.

He said that by organising such fairs he was trying to help poor people of the state but his efforts were going in vain since the Centre was not acting to control price rise.

He said Garib Kalyan Melas aim to remove middlemen, adding, "Benefits of government schemes so far were not reaching poor people as middlemen used to take away large chunk of benefits."
