On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said on Monday that all projects inaugurated in the state since the BJP-led government had come to power were “ready and functional” but the Congress-led UPA had failed to inaugurate them and take credit.

Speaking with HT, Omar said the UPA had “handed over” projects to the NDA. “The Prime Minister is welcome to visit the state, but the credit for works like the hydro power projects in Ladakh or Uri, and the Katra-Udhampur railway link should have gone to (former PM) Manmohan Singh. I am disappointed that they (UPA) never bothered to inaugurate them,” he said. “The UPA just handed over the projects on a platter to PM Modi to inaugurate.”

Modi will lay the foundation of the 330km Leh-Srinagar power transmission line and inaugurate two hydro-power projects in the Ladakh region (Kargil and Leh) during his day-long visit to the state on Tuesday. Omar said, “Even the Leh-Srinagar transmission line was conceived, designed and approved by the UPA government.”

Of the other projects Modi is to inaugurate, the Chutak hydro power project in Kargil district is built on the Suru river and has generation capacity of 44 MW, while the Nimoo Bazgo project in Leh is built on the Indus with 45MW capacity.

This will be Modi’s first visit to the cold desert, Ladakh region, and the second to the state after he took over as PM. He had last month inaugurated the 240MW Uri-II hydro electric project near the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district of Kashmir. He had also inaugurated the railway link between Katra, the base town for the Vaishno Devi shrine, to Udhampur and thus effectively the rest of the country.
