The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) on Thursday announced that a weeklong “Jail Bharo” programme would be launched from November 20, to November 27, 2006 to protest against the misrule of Mulayam Singh yadav government.
The UPCC President Salman Khurshid talking to media persons said the Congressmen of two sectors would take part in the “Jail Bharo” from November 20 to November 24, 2006. The Congressmen would thereafter ‘gherao’ Lucknow and take part in the “Jail Bharo’ on November 27, 2006. A final programme of the ‘Jail Bharo” would be announced soon, he said.
Significantly the Congress President Sonia Gandhi had given a call for the ‘Jail Bharo’ while addressing the party’s “Nav Nirman Rally” at Bareilly on September 20, 2006. This is after a long gap that the UPCC has announced dates for the “Jail Bharo” agitation.
Referring to the outcome of the elections to urban local bodies Khurshid said the situation was turning in favour of Congress. The Congress’ efforts were showing results now, he said adding that the party had also performed well in Bundelkhand region. The party also won the Allahabad Mayor’s seat, he said adding this was sharp contrast to party’s performance there earlier. About the role of State Election Commissioner (SEC) Aparamita Prasad Singh Khurshid said no single person could be held responsible for the rigging ion the elections to urban local bodies. His statement was in sharp contrast to the assertions being made by other leaders who have flayed the SEC for his alleged failure to ensure free and fair poll.
