US group sets up Rs 40-lakh green award

Sierra Club, a US-based environmental organisation, on Thursday announced a new USD 100,000 Green Energy and Green Livelihoods Achievement Award.

"The award would recognise outstanding environmental success in India by civil society organisations, NGOs, cooperatives, small businesses and labour unions working at the grassroots level, " Carl Pope, Executive Director, Sierra Club, said here.

Sierra Club is one of the oldest and largest grassroots environmental group in the US.

The winner of the first Green Energy and Green Livelihoods Achievement Award will be announced here early next year.

The award would be given annually to one exemplary environmental or related organisation that satisfies predetermined criteria for constructive community-based work.
