Well-known journalist MJ Akbar and late actor-parliamentarian Sunil Dutt will be conferred the Pride of India award for 2006 by the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI).

While Dutt is being posthumously honoured for his relentless efforts to promote communal harmony and social justice, Akbar will get the award for his outstanding contribution to Indian society through his literary and journalistic accomplishments, according to an AFMI press release.

Announcing this year's award recipients, AFMI president Akram Syed said that they were selected for their commitment and dedication to a strong, secular and pluralistic India.

A large number of educationists, social workers and politicians are expected to attend the ceremony, to be held in New York in September.

Earlier recipients of the award include VP Singh, IK Gujral, Obaid Siddiqi, Kiran Bedi, N Ram, Maulana Abdul Karim, Arun Gandhi and Sam Pitroda.

Formed in 1989, AFMI is a registered philanthropic charity with representatives across the US and Canada.
